Today is a very special day to me: Not alone is it my 44th birthday but it is Mothers Day. Today I want to share my heart's knowing with you about the role that each of us have to play to become World Mothers and Fathers to bring healing and transformation to this world.
There is a saying in one of the scriptures which states that only God knows the heart of a woman. Even if it is a verse from an ancient text, I find that it is relevant to the times we live in. The foundation of the World Mother image is the feminine principle, which is all about virtue...virtues like mercy, humility, compassion, love, forgiveness, tolerance, inner peace, passion and patience. Virtues like these are exactly what the world need today. Both the feminine and masculine principles are to be found in each of us but it is this one principle, the principle of virtue, which will do the most service in today's world. Because I am a women my character has been predisposed to these qualities from birth in one way or the other. These virtues are part of who we as women are, whether it is awakened or asleep, and it is part of the preparation for the fulfillment of each our responsibilities to our spiritual family - the whole world.
In a world where women have been seen traditionally as someone's wife, mother, daughter, or sister, why would a woman choose to follow a spiritual path? Perhaps because, deep inside every woman has a longing to “be” someone in her own right — fully aware of herself, confident and in control. When we talk of spiritual power, we are in fact referring to the original power of the self to be whole and independent — free from the web of domination and suppression, free from the need to exist for someone else's sake. Many women's inner power and goddess are asleep and need to be awakened, thus, my focus on women empowerment from the inside out. In many areas of society, a woman's view is not really heard or accepted. This is one of the reasons why women are many times more receptive to the love of God. The feeling is that God knows and understand the feelings of her heart and the power of her soul. God knows about a woman's greatness and virtues, especially the qualities of mercy, love and truth...God knows that a woman can use these qualities not just for herself or her immediate family, but for the whole world. He knows that if she wishes, she can be more than just the mother of one family - she can be a mother of the world - the family of humanity.
God knows there is nothing as important as a mother. The mother is the one who sustains the family. God knows that the mothers are the real awakeners and the real teachers, the real gurus of the world with deep inner wisdom if it becomes awakened. In these times of darkness, greed, sorrow and intolerance, a woman's role is more important than ever before and is a very powerful one indeed. If she stays in her own self-respect and self-love and takes power from the Source, she can give the message of hope, love and transformation in a very impactful way. Not only can she lead others with her light and powerful love out of their own darkness and stickiness but she can lift them into the boat of Truth.
There are three qualities that come quite easily to a woman: tolerance, real mercy and the power of truth. These qualities serve to produce a very big, open and generous heart - the heart of a world mother. The image of the world mother is significant in today's world. She is the one whose only desire is to help others move forward - no matter what the challenges that surround her...
For a period of time in my life I had the thought that this is 'a man's world" and that we as women must make more sacrifices and adopt many of the masculine virtues and at a time of my life I did - but not anymore as I know the healing and transformation power of being a woman and being softly powerful. In today's world, true success will require constant courage, resilience, authenticity, humility, wisdom and complete honesty on our part. Each of us will need to develop the virtue of courage and when we feel afraid, lonely, misunderstood or discouraged; then we must take a moment of silence and go deep within our hearts and connect with our soul and with God, and evoke courage. Then we must surrender to God (whatever you may call Him) and have the faith that each of us have the solution - that we do have the answers - that we do what must be done and never let ourselves be influenced by what others might be thinking. Just turn inwards, emerge the wisdom that is within, and then do something with it.
Women become spiritual leaders when they themselves acknowledge they have the capacity and necessary attributes to play such a role. The change of consciousness needed is to move away from unworthy feelings and attitudes and to see the greatness contained within the self. Feminine qualities such as love, tolerance, compassion, understanding and humility are qualities of leadership. They are also needed for spiritual progress, for without them it would be impossible to come close to God and attain self-realisation. Every human being possesses those qualities but women are more easily and naturally able to tap them, for feelings of love and devotion are often more natural to women, combined with a profound sense of discipline and order. A true leader leads through example.
Women know how to serve and how to give. Often the notion of service or of putting others in front has been seen as a sign of weakness or lack of power. Quite the opposite is true. The ability to bow before others, with true humility, is the sign of the greatness of a soul who has conquered ego. However this quality of giving to others must also be balanced with qualities of courage, determination, clear thinking and self-respect. Too often, women have a tendency to give to others and neglect their own spiritual needs. It is one of the major reasons women find themselves depleted and lacking in spiritual power.
The foundation for assuming spiritual leadership is thus a change of consciousness. Overcoming the huge physical, religious and sociological barriers which have prevented women becoming spiritual leaders can only be done through the development of self-respect. The quality of self-respect comes from the knowledge and experience of the eternal self which is beyond social, cultural or physical identity. The eternal self or soul is pure, peaceful and complete with divine and spiritual qualities. When women touch this inner, eternal core, they gain the courage to play the part they are capable of. Spiritual power is an expression of the inherent qualities of the spirit and has nothing to do with gender or physical limitations. Feelings of domination or suppression occur when there is the awareness of superiority or inferiority. Feelings of equality, however, manifest when there is the consciousness of spirit or soul. These feelings and attitudes can be expressed in actions with positive results.
Dear friends, human life is so valuable, thus, it is important to live it out with purpose. If you can keep yourself in learning mode and allow the women in your life to become who they are meant to be - world mothers - you have served humanity well. Allow her to be alive and to BE herself. In the words of Jospeh Campbell, "People say that we are all seeking a meaning for life. I think what we are seeking is an experience of being alive...Actually feeling the rapture of being alive..." The very center of your heart is where your life begins - the most beautiful place on Earth..
